The Story
General Mitchell International Airport (MKE) is named after Brigadier General William 'Billy' Mitchell, a Milwaukee native widely regarded as the father of the U.S. Air Force, who was court-martialed for his outspoken advocacy of air power but was ultimately vindicated by history. The airport itself dates to Milwaukee County's purchase of the land in 1926 and has grown into a mid-size hub that proudly leans into its local identity — from the Bartolotta restaurant group's Italian concepts to a Barons' Beer Garden named for Milwaukee's legendary brewing families. It even has a famous 'Recombobulation Area' post-security, a tongue-in-cheek designated space to reassemble yourself after the TSA gauntlet that has become a beloved photo spot.
