Great for vegans
The Fork in the Road Café inside the store offers vegan sandwiches, daily homemade soups (including a veggie chili), and vegan pastries. The hot buffet bar is sold by weight with rotating vegan options, and the grocery aisles are stocked with a wide selection of vegan and organic products, plus a robust bulk section.
The Story
Outpost Natural Foods is Milwaukee's beloved community-owned grocery co-op, born in the early 1970s when a scrappy group of locals pooled their money and idealism into what was then called the East Kane Street Co-op. The Bay View location on Kinnickinnic Ave is especially special — it's home to Outpost's Central Kitchen, where fresh wraps, soups, salads, and bakery treats are made daily for all store locations and even local hospital accounts. Named Best Organic Grocery in Milwaukee by the Shepherd Express, this place is a neighborhood institution that's grown from countercultural roots into a genuine community anchor.
Before You Go
The in-store Market Café and grab-'n'-go case are your best bets for a quick vegan meal — arrive early for the best selection, as hot buffet items and baked goods sell out. Menu items rotate seasonally and can change without notice, so calling ahead (414-755-3202) is worthwhile if you have specific cravings. You can shop as a regular customer or pay $30/year to become a co-op 'owner' and unlock member discounts.
