The Story
Built in 1892 for Captain Frederick Pabst — beer baron, former sea captain, and one of Milwaukee's most colorful Gilded Age titans — this 37-room Flemish Renaissance mansion narrowly escaped demolition and becoming a parking lot before being rescued and opened for tours in 1978. Designed by the prestigious firm Ferry & Clas, it still holds much of its original furnishings, intricate ironwork, and exceptional wood craftsmanship, making it one of the most intact house museums of its era in the Midwest. The mansion is currently mid-way through a $5.6 million exterior restoration campaign, so expect some scaffolding — but the inside is as grand as ever.
Before You Go
No reservations needed for general admission — just show up between 10AM–4PM Sun–Thu or 10AM–5PM Fri–Sat. Parking is across the street due to the ongoing exterior restoration, so plan an extra few minutes. Several tour formats are available (fine arts, happy hour, family-friendly, mimosa), so check the website ahead of time to snag the one that fits your vibe.
